This book is a celebration of literary society Chi Delta Theta, once thought to be a relic of the past brought back to life by a new generation of students eager to cultivate literary culture and achievement at Yale. Founded in 1805 by Professor Kingsley, Chi Delta Theta was active up until 1837 when it was disbanded following a decline in interest, only to be revived by the author in the early 20th century. Much of this book speaks to the themes of ambition and democracy in the field of literature, particularly within the context of Yale's social and literary culture. The author argues that the university's reputation as a democratic institution only extended to matters of class, and not to the realm of extracurricular achievement, which was dominated by social cliques and fraternities. Chi Delta Theta, however, was different, welcoming any student of merit, which ensured not only a higher quality of membership, but fostered an atmosphere of friendly but competitive literary discussion. The author suggests that Chi Delta Theta was, and is, a haven for those more interested in the ideas of literature than the intoxicating atmosphere of social achievement.
