Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book traces the historical development of educational curricula from the earliest monastic schools to the present day. The author argues that the history of curriculum development can be divided into two main periods: the period of formal, classical education, which lasted from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, and the period of modern, child-centered education which followed. During the first period, the curriculum was based on the study of Latin, Greek, and mathematics. The goal of education was to produce scholars and gentlemen who would be able to take their place in the ruling class. In the second period, the curriculum was broadened to include a wider range of subjects, such as science, history, and geography. The goal of education became to develop the whole child, not just the intellect. The author concludes that the history of curriculum development is a reflection of the changing social and intellectual needs of society. As society has changed, so too has the curriculum of its schools.
