This book presents a chronological compilation of documents detailing the multifaceted relationship between the city of Mulhouse and its overlords throughout the 15th century, a period of great upheaval and change. These documents, many of which are published here for the first time, provide insights into the struggles of a free imperial city caught between powerful political forces. The collection begins with the year 1466, when tensions between Mulhouse and the Habsburg dukes of Austria had reached a boiling point. Faced with the threat of annexation, the city turned to the protection of Sigismund, Archduke of Austria and Count of Tyrol, who granted them a charter of liberties. However, Sigismund's financial difficulties forced him to pawn Mulhouse to Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy in 1469. Under Burgundian rule, Mulhouse faced new challenges. The city's traditional autonomy was curtailed, and it was forced to contribute to the war effort against the Swiss Confederacy. The increasing financial burden and political oppression led to growing discontent among the citizens, who eventually revolted in 1474. The uprising was brutally suppressed by Charles the Bold, and Mulhouse was forced to pay a heavy price for its defiance. The documents in this book provide a rich and detailed account of these events, shedding light on the political, economic, and social forces that shaped the history of Mulhouse during this tumultuous period. They offer valuable insights into the complex relationship between a free city and its overlords, and the challenges faced by urban communities in the late Middle Ages.
