Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a novel set in and around New York during the early 20th century and tells the story of Kitty Cobb, a young woman who leaves her rural home for the city in pursuit of a better life. Along the way, she encounters a host of characters who teach her the ups and downs of city life. In the early 1900s, Americans in large numbers left their rural homesteads, drawn to the promise of the big city like moths to a flame. This book gives readers a glimpse into the realities of life for such an individual. Family and friends are left behind, and there is little to soften the harsh realities of urban living. Kitty Cobb, having arrived with just $130 and a suitcase, quickly learns of the social and economic barriers she must overcome just to survive. Working as a clerk in a department store, she manages to secure a single room on the upper floor of a boarding house. But Kittyâs resilience is never in question. She is undaunted by the city's many challenges and never loses her yearning for something more. She is befriended and taken under the wing of a âburlesque queen,â but must learn to stand on her own two feet when that friendship becomes strained. These early adventures give the reader a glimpse of the social hierarchy and economic realities of New York's theatrical world and the characters who inhabited it. Over time, Kitty lands a position as a stenographer with a small firm and then manages to obtain the position of usher in a theatre. There, she meets Mrs. Effingham Caldecott, a wealthy woman who takes Kitty under her wing and introduces her to New York society. She meets Bob, Mrs. Caldecott's son, and her life is forever changed. The book follows Kitty through the early years of her marriage to Bob, the trials and tribulations of being a young upper-class wife, and the various social mores and expectations of the time. The author gives us a glimpse into the ways in which these norms and societal structures can conflict with a woman's natural desires. Ultimately, Kittyâs story examines the complexities of female identity, independence, and the compromises women have often had to make to find acceptance and fulfillment. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of the female spirit.
