Organised into two parts, it begins by describing the general rules of evidence before discussing specific evidentiary categories. In the first section, the author discusses the competency and credibility of witnesses, their examination, and the evidence they are and are not permitted to give. The second part of the book examines written evidence, comprising of records, public writings not of record, and private writings. The author also discusses parol evidence and the methods of explaining written instruments. Originally published in 1791 as a digest of decisions on the law of evidence, this book quickly attained a level of authority such that its statements could be cited to the court like any other standard reference work. The author's framework for organising evidence, which comprises a division between written and parol forms, remains in use to this day.
