Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is the first part of an extensive work which translates into English, and greatly expands upon, the Latin prose treatise De Casibus Virorum Illustrium by the Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. It was written during the reign of Henry VI by John Lydgate, at the request of the Duke of Gloucester, and takes the form of a series of seven-and eight-line stanzas in rhyme royal. The work serves two main purposes: it presents a vivid picture of the lives and deaths of those who have achieved greatness, and discusses the morality of power and ambition. The author argues that the world is governed by Fortune, a fickle and malicious force that delights in destroying the innocent and powerful. By presenting examples of the downfalls of rulers, princes and conquerors, the book cautions against the abuse of power and the pursuit of worldly glory.
