This book explores the dangerous operation of ovariotomy, a procedure developed in the 19th century to remove diseased ovaries, which often led to sepsis and death. The author, a surgeon who performed the operation himself, argues that sepsis commonly occurred because surgeons left behind infected fluids, blood, and tissue fragments after surgery. To address this issue, he proposed a method of creating an opening in the abdomen and draining away fluids and tissue after surgery, a technique that was eventually adopted by most surgeons and significantly reduced the mortality rate of ovariotomy.
