Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an account of the efforts undertaken by the Sanitary Commission to support the troops and alleviate suffering during the American Civil War, offering a glimpse into the unsung humanitarian work that took place amidst the conflict. The author, a leading figure in the Commission, describes the establishment of a "Soldiers' Home" in Washington D.C., a refuge for sick and wounded soldiers awaiting treatment or their discharge. The book highlights the challenges faced by the Commission in meeting the needs of the influx of soldiers, the lack of medical supplies, and the urgent need for proper care. Through the author's firsthand observations, we witness the resilience and patriotism of the soldiers, as well as the dedication of those who risked their lives to provide aid. This book offers a valuable perspective on the human cost of war and the importance of compassion and support in times of crisis.
