Excerpt from A Classified List of All Simple and Compound Cuneiform Ideographs Occurring in the Texts Hitherto Published, With Their Assyro-Babylonian Equivalents, Phonetic Values, Etc., Vol. 1
Unpublished syllabaries and bilingual texts have not been made use of except in a few isolated instances, as a thorough examination of those in the British Museum would have entailed a prolonged residence in London, and so have postponed the publication of this work for an indefinite period. Indeed, had I become acquainted with the vast number of texts which still await publication before commencing my work, I fear that I should not have had the courage to proceed with it. For the same reason I did not undertake a fresh collation of the published texts. The many excellent editions and collations which have already appeared, foremost among which stand the works mentioned above, seemed to me to be a sufficient foundation for a sign-list, which after all does not claim to be much more than an index to those editions.
