Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the history of the standardization of cotton linters, a short fiber remaining on cottonseeds after the lint has been removed. Once a nuisance, linters have become valuable in the production of goods such as bedding, furniture, and batteries. The author details how the industry, initially reliant on private types to describe quality, worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop official standards in 1926. These standards provided a universal means for describing quality, aiding in production control and marketing. However, as processing methods changed, the standards no longer accurately represented the qualities being produced. Through surveys and the development of scientific measurement tools, this book outlines the process of revising the standards in 1956. The revised standards, which included physical and staple standards and the establishment of descriptive terms, better represented the range of qualities being produced and facilitated more equitable trading practices. This book provides a comprehensive account of the evolution of cotton linters standards, highlighting the collaboration between industry and government in establishing a common language for describing and evaluating the quality of this important commodity.
