It was written by two experienced field biologists and supervised by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. The areas described in this book include the Alligator River and Swan Lake, Cypress Park, Roper Island, New Lake Fork Pocosin, Gull Rock Gamelands, Scranton Hardwoods, and Salyer's Ridge. They contain slightly over ten thousand acres and at least 42 significant features. Six of the seven areas described are wholly in private ownership. The seventh, Gull Rock Gamelands, is publicly owned. All but two of the seven are entirely wetland habitats. The authors provide detailed overviews of the vegetation, soils, and hydrology of each of the areas. In addition, they provide information on the significant plant and animal species found in each area. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural history of Hyde County, North Carolina. It provides detailed information on some of the most unique and ecologically significant natural areas in the county.
