Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book studies the causes of more frequent and destructive overflows of the Mississippi River delta in recent times. The author describes the greater frequency and severity of floods as due to several primary factors: extension of cultivation, which increases evaporation and reduces absorption; extension of levees, which confine the water that was formerly spread over a wider area; cut-offs, natural and artificial, which shorten the river's course and increase its velocity; and the gradual progress of the delta into the sea, which lengthens its course and diminishes its velocity and depth. Each of these causes is likely to continue, and the author predicts that future floods will be higher and higher, and warns that the safety of the delta's population may depend on the adoption of prompt and vigorous flood control measures, of which he discusses several options. The book will appeal not only to engineers and hydrologists but to anyone interested in the history, ecology, and future of the Mississippi River and its vast delta.
