This little book was first compiled in the hope of sup plying some useful assistance to the reading public. The modest place which it has kept for more than twenty years seems to show that it has not been with out its value.

It was not intended for scholars nor for linguists, who do not need it. It was planned to help the large number of readers who often wander far afield in the world of books, and who know but little of any language than their own. For them the signs and directions have been made as simple as possible, and it is hoped that they will be found clear.

The original edition contained considerably more than the words claimed for it, and for this new edition about 1500 words have been added, and the whole work has been carefully reed. The new words are for the most part names of persons places, characters in literature, etc., which have come into prominence since the publication of the first edition.
