This book presents the interdisciplinary research of scientists and engineers who bring a variety of approaches to bear upon biomedical problems, with particular emphasis on materials research.
Part I, “From Molecule to Functioning System,” takes up globular membrane proteins as functional units of ionic transport, salt and water transport in biological systems, and electronic structure and function of metal ions in biomolecules. Part II, “Probes That Link the Macroscopic with the Microscopic,” points up new experimental techniques, such as molecular microscopy and the scanning electron microscope. Part III, “Medical Problems and the Approaches Provided by Materials Science,” discusses joint wear, orthopedic implants, blood preservation by freezing, heat transfer in biomaterials, ultrasound in biology and medicine, the effects of infrared laser radiation on biological systems, and the biomechanics of reproductive biology.
The contributors to Biomedical Physics and Biomaterials Science are nationally recognized experts in the field, and many are members of the Harvard Medical School-M.I.T. Program in Biomaterials Science, which is under the general auspices of the Harvard-M.I.T. Program in Health Sciences and Technology.
