This book traces the office of Reader from 1561 in the reign of Elizabeth I to the present day throughout the Commonwealth, and is in particular a celebration of the 125 years since the revival of the ministry. Rhoda Hiscox brings his judgement to bear on the various issues involved and challenges the Church to face them: questions of selection and training of Readers, non-stipendary ordained ministry and the ecumenical dimension and the need for change. This makes a critical study of Readers and of the attitudes of laity and clergy to Reader ministry, reflecting the reluctance of the institutional Church to take seriously the "priesthood of all believers".

'n 1991 8,000 Readers, a quarter of them women, celebrate the 125th anniversary of the revival of Reader ministry in the Church of England. Though the number of Readers admitted annually exceeds the nyumber of those ordained, they are no longer 'stop-gaps' but exercise a preaching, teaching and pastoral ministry. The history of Reader ministry is described, from its uncertain beginnings in 1866, as it developed in the dioceses and nationally. It is now recognized as part of the whole ministry of the Church, and the only voluntary lay ministry which is nationally accredited, episcopally licensed and governed by canon.
