This book traces the history of that school, the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, which under the leadership of General 0. 0. Howard was able to educate thousands of former slaves and provide them with the skills to teach, farm, and work in a variety of trades. At the time of this bookâs 1875 publication, the school has provided teacher training for nearly five hundred former slaves, many of whom are now employed in teaching their people in neighboring states such as North Carolina and West Virginia. Graduates of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute comprise a quarter of the black teachers employed in the state of Virginia, working in schools alongside former slave owners, and are seen as essential contributors to the educational, social, and economic reconstruction of the South following the Civil War.
