It is related that while he was still a school-boy, he used to make presents of ?owers to Kate Baker as love-tokens. In course of time She left Dublin, as he did, her father having been appointed master of the endowed school at Navan. Thither followed Lever from his northern home, and soon was accepted. It is believed that in order to avoid the anger of old James Lever, who was anxious that his son should make a wealthy match, the marriage was kept secret for some time.
