Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book endeavors to analyze the significance of the absence of reactions of both ears' vertical canals to stimulation by stimulation by the cold caloric, and the reduction in the duration of nystagmus from turning in diffuse lesions of the cerebrospinal system pathways over the cerebellar cortex. It emphasizes the low evolutionary development and comparatively late acquisition of audition, but also its high specialization, and argues that such damage tends to be irreparable. It highlights that the works published on the subject at the time were largely overconfident and overstated their conclusions and that the vestibular reactions are primitive reflexes that are easily compensated for. The author believes that to move forward the present method of interpreting vestibular reactions based on interference with vestibular pathways must be largely abandoned, and the abnormal vestibular reactions listed as they are clinically present in different diseases and lesions. The author suggests alternate classifications and categorizes abnormal vestibular reactions to various surgical and non-surgical conditions. The author warns that rotation may, under certain conditions, precipitate alarming or even dangerous disturbances, providing examples, and provides a detailed description of the vestibular apparatus in both invertebrates and vertebrates. The text concludes by noting that only by creating a slow, laborious, and uninspiring catalog of vestibular manifestations of various lesions can any real progress be made.
