Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book documents the increasing prevalence of tuberculosis and the rising concern for its impact in the state of Wisconsin from 1903-1904. The state authorities commissioned a detailed investigation into the causes and effects of this fatal yet curable disease, ultimately concluding that a significant number of lives could be saved and suffering diminished by the provision of state-supported sanatoria. The author discusses the necessity of sanatoriums to provide infected patients with the best chance at recovery, the importance of early treatment, and the education of both the afflicted and the public at large in preventative measures. The author advocates for the sanatorium approach on both humanitarian and economic grounds. The book concludes that the Wisconsin State Tuberculosis Commission should step up its efforts to prevent and treat consumption, which disproportionally affects the state's working-age population, and especially those living in densely populated urban areas.
