Excerpt from High School Algebra
The fundamental principles are stated and proved after the manner of theorems in geometry. Pupils are expected to memorize the statements of the propositions and to demonstrate them in a formal manner at the blackboard. The emphasis is placed upon principles rather than upon examples, under the conviction that if we take care of the principles the examples will take care of themselves. The mere reading, without memorizing, of statements, or the mere discussion, without reproduction, of demonstrations never makes a definite or a lasting impression. The pupil who solves examples merely by models becomes an imitator instead of a thinker. When tested by the college examiner, he is found to possess many fragmentary and crude ideas.
