This collection of writings, mostly drawn from earlier publications, offers critical evaluations of a variety of literary works published in the mid-18th century. It gives us a glimpse into the cultural scene following the death of Louis XIV. As is common when one era ends and another begins, this was a time of both new ideas and a preservation of the old. The author notes that while some writers try to distinguish themselves by creating something new, many others cling to the venerated styles of the past. There is a lively discussion of the difference between classic and modern theater. One of the more extensive discussions in this collection centers around "Zadiz" by Voltaire. The author points out that it is not enough for a writer to be excellent in only one genre, though this is a fairly common human failing. He goes on to elaborate on this point by showing that while Voltaire was a master of the epic poem, his theatrical works were less impressive. Of particular interest to the author is the role of sentimentality in the works of the day. He sees this as a mixed blessing, noting that while it leads to a greater authenticity of expression, it can also lead to a loss of decorum. The author concludes with a sweeping discussion of changing literary tastes. Noting that the 17th-century authors were obsessed with wit, he points out that this artificial style is starting to fall out of fashion. Instead, the search for truth and nature has come to the forefront, and authors and readers alike are turning their attention to the virtues of the common man, rather than relying on tales of gods and goddesses.
