Published in 1833, the text begins by depicting the founders' vision of the university as an institution on par with the great educational establishments in Europe. However, the authors argue that the school's first chancellor, the Reverend Dr. Mathews, consistently fell short of the mark. Mathews exhibited a lack of leadership and administrative skill, which stalled much-needed reforms and negatively impacted discipline. The inefficiencies in the administration caused a breakdown in collegiality and trust among the faculty. The book also points out how the council overseeing the university largely ratified Mathews's decisions without proper due diligence. The authors maintain that the university's success was stifled by the chancellor's inadequacy, and that their resignations were necessary to preserve the integrity of the institution.
