Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. In the early days of Massachusetts, farming was the primary occupation of its inhabitants. The twentieth century, however, brought about a significant decline in the acreage of farmland, resulting in a serious maladjustment in the use of land. This book examines this issue and presents a detailed land survey of the entire Commonwealth, analyzing the data to indicate desirable developments in land use for individual towns. The author describes one town where more than 80% of the employable male population receives their income from work for the town and from the federal government's Works Progress Administration. The report concludes that the taxpayers of Massachusetts are subsidizing unsound land use and encouraging a residual population to remain in a region which cannot offer them economic opportunity or a decent standard of living. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in land use planning and the history of Massachusetts.
