Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the findings of a survey of 180 small private forest landowners in central Wisconsin. The research was conducted in 1958 with the intention of better understanding the attitudes and behaviors of these landowners and to learn more about how to improve forestry practices. The author found that the majority of landowners were interested in timber growing and grazing, with over half of the owners reporting that they had sold timber from their land. However, the author also found that few landowners had applied forest practices to their properties, few had contacted professional foresters, and few had taken advantage of the cost-sharing plans for forestry available under the Agricultural Conservation Program. The author concludes that while there are a number of obstacles to improved forest management, the widespread use of home-use products and the equally widespread practice of owner-harvest, coupled with the low farm incomes of the area, provide a situation where the promotion of forestry practices could succeed.
