IT is not the design of this treatise to make arith metic easy, nor to give such practical rules as may be most useful in business. The Arithmetics in common use are amply sufficient for this purpose.

The present work aims rather at the develop ment of ideas, than the incation of rules. It presupposes that the student can cipher, and would only teach him how to think, - how to handle the idea of numbers with which he is familiar, in the same manner in which he must take up, in higher mathematics, the ideas of space, velocity, 650. In this way, it hopes to smooth the path for his future progress in new branches of study.
