The experiments were performed m an inside basement room, the walls and ceiling of which were lined with 4 inches of cork. There were, therefore, no complications caused by vibration, or by stray convection currents set up by unequal temperatures Within the room.

In Figure 1 is shown a plan view of the interferometer together with the light source, the heated surface, and the camera.
