Nobilissimum opus Herodoti quomodo natum esset, a multis nostra aetate quaesitum est. Sed cum inter omnes fere conatet, quo tempore in ultimam formam sit redactum, oeterae eins modi quaestiones minus teliciter tractatae sunt, neque equidmn crediderim fore ut nnquam in summa testimoniornm inopia inveniantur, quae vel modicis desideriis satisfaciant. Quam oh rem non possum non mirari quod iterum atque iterum viri doeti de itineribus atque redtationibus Herodoti dissemerunt, alias quaestiones neglexerunt, e quibus maior certe fruetus ad ìndolem scriptoris pmpiciendam capi potest. Nam qua ratione Herodotus fabulis undique congestis usus sit, quasque leges sibi in compouendis historiis scripserit, primus quoad scio dinqne postramus Nitzschius quaesivit; qui quamquam brevita tantum atque summatim eam matariam tractavit, tamen multa et speciosa invenit atque dignus fuit, qui aliorum studia in eitaret.
