He was seventh in descent from Edmund Rice, who came from Berkhampstead, in the County of Hertfordshire, England, and settled in Sudbury, in 1638 or 1639.

On his mother's side he was eighth in descent from John Whitney, who came from Whitney, on the banks of the Wye, and settled in Watertown, June, 1635.
