All sections explore the interaction with encroaching competition, new technology, and a desire for greater freedom.

DANIEL J. RYAN has been with the Economics Department at Temple University since 1990, including three years at TU's Japan campus in Tokyo. His specialties are international economics and industry studies He received his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley. Previously he worked as an engineer at Dow Chemical in Walnut Creek, CA.
