We have emerged from a century of sustained attack upon the Scriptures whose defence has been left to relatively few. There are signs that the latter s numbers may be increasing, one of them being this revision of a book first published in 1982, subtitled Amazing facts about the book Christians call God s Word . It opens with the question of whether the Bible is worth reading, since although it remains a best-seller, it is well-known that it is relatively rarely read. In pursuit of this, an introduction is given to the background of the various Biblical writers and their distinctive styles, with attention drawn to a surprising similarity to several issues today with those of the Old Testament. Moving on to the Bible s reliability, let alone whether it is worth studying, there are some really interesting comments. Much of the discussion centres upon two tables (pp.38-39) of the earliest copies of many ancient classical writings and those of the New Testament. The fact is that the latter are not only much older but are far closer to the dates of the original events. The observation is made that no one disputes the accuracy of the available manuscripts of the various classical writers; so why should there by such queries on those of the New Testament? As for the Old Testament, there is a detailed explanation of the incredibly careful practices of the Jewish copyists, along with corroborative evidence that has emerged from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Of the Bible s inspiration, the author has no doubt. He addresses in some detail some of the questions that have been raised over the years on the factual accuracy of certain Old Testament events, as he also does with the historical accuracy of the New, in particular with those books written by Luke. Two notable points are what Genesis says about the procreation process ( the seed of the woman ), which science discovered only in recent times, and Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing . How could he have known that without the inspiration of God? Overall this is not an in depth response to the most frequently heard comments by critics and gainsayers; but it does provide a broad overview of how they may be answered. Is this book recommended? Well, I am going to buy another copy! Reviewed by Peter Murcott, British Church Newspaper, 1 July 2011. --Peter Murcott, British Church Newspaper, 1 July 2011.
This book asks a series of questions. What is the Bible? Where did it come from? Is it unique? Is it fact or fiction? Is it inspired? Is it worth reading? Is it worth studying? Is it worth believing? As a sub-title the cover advertises the contents of the book as containing amazing facts about the book Christians call God s Word. Without becoming too technical, the author has assembled facts and arguments attesting the authenticity of the Bible as being a message to mankind from his Creator. Some of the facts are already well known, others are lesser known, but nevertheless, well worth reading. The main value of the book is that all these proofs of the Bible s origin are brought together in an attractive manner into one volume. Certainly worth having and reading. The author shows that the Bible, far from being discredited by modern knowledge, is still reliable, relevant and the authentic word of God. Many charts and diagrams enhance the liveliness of the text.
