Hymns can speak to our deepest needs, reassure us, offer us hope and enrich our understanding of divine love. They also open up the Bible am its teachings, relating them to our understanding of moral issues and personal development. In Awake My Soul, Professor J.R. Watson provides thoughtful but very readable commentary on 30 hymns. His aim is to introduce us to the rich seams of spiritual writing to be found in some of those we love the best including: 'When I survey the wondrous cross' 'The King of love my Shepherd is' 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, 'Love Devine, al loves excelling' and 'For the beauty of the earth'

J R Watson is Emeritus Professor of English, University of Durham, where he taught for 21 years. He is interested in the whole relationship between religion and literature, and in the communication of the sacred. His book on Wordsworth, Wordsworth's Vital Soul (1982) deals in part with this. In recent years he has concentrated on hymnology: The English Hymn (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1997) was followed by An Annotated Anthology of Hymns (Oxford University Press, 2002, paperback 2003). Dick Watson is currently general editor for a projected replacement for John Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology (1892, 1907), a task which killed off several people who attempted it in the twentieth century.
