The author was tasked with the mission of placing a steamer on the Lake, which had been attempted and failed in 1861. The author was also the leader of the search expedition for Dr. David Livingstone in 1867. The author speaks on the urgency of the task, as this was central to Dr. Livingstone's vision in curtailing the slave trade, which was the central blockage to progress and peace in the region. The expedition team describe their travels and experiences along the way, including the difficulties and challenges they faced in navigating the rivers and transporting their steamer.
