At the heart of this defiance was the refusal to remove their hats in places of worship. The hat, for these men, was a powerful metaphor for freedom of conscience, especially in the late 19th century when societal rules were strictly enforced. Their actions, deemed rebellious by some, brought them into conflict with the Society of Friends (Quakers), and ultimately led to their expulsion. Yet, the author shows how the three men's ejection from the society actually highlights the origins of Quakerism and its principles of social change and equality.
