The following work aims at giving a popular and accurate view of the main principles of tlie science of Electricity, and at preparing the way for the technical or mathematical study of them. It is intended to embrace the same class of readers as the Chemistry of the course, namely, the senior pupils at school, and junior students at college. The work is divided into six sections; each section is divided into chapters; and each chapter into paragraphs. This division is made with a view to convey a clear idea of the connection of the main branches of the science, and of the various phenomena included under each. The fluid theories of electricity, on which the more usual terms of the science are based, are explained at sufficient length. They are apt, however, to convey the idea that electricity is a principle distinct from matter, an impression not borne out by experience.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book approaches the study of electricity and magnetism through a review of the main principles that govern each one. Beginning with static electricity and frictional discharges, the author lays a foundation for understanding electric phenomena in its dualistic form; both positive and negative. The book goes on to describe the properties of electric currents, explaining how they manifest in their path and external to it. A substantial section is then dedicated to magnetism, a field closely allied to current electricity. Concepts like polarity and the relationship between magnetic poles are discussed. The book concludes with an exploration into terrestrial magnetism, the study of our planet's magnetic field and its effects. The author explains how the study of this field laid the groundwork for the understanding of the Earth as a planet as well as our solar system as a whole.
