Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the electrical phenomenon produced by burying a zinc plate in the earth and connecting it to a copper plate similarly buried at a distance. The author, a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy, describes a series of experiments varying aspects of the setup to determine the factors influencing electrical intensity. The author demonstrates that a zinc plate a foot square buried in the earth, with a copper plate of the same size dropped into a well, can generate enough power to operate a telegraph over a distance of ten miles. This economical battery is argued to have potential applications for short-distance telegraphs. Furthermore, the author presents a curve illustrating the relationship between the amount of copper surface immersed in water and the intensity of the electric current. The study is placed within the context of previous work by Bain, who discovered the phenomenon, and Morse, who published on the subject. This book contributes to the understanding of electricity as a resource and the practical applications of electromagnetism.
