When the hand-loom was in general use weaving mechan ism was of a comparatively simple type, and weaving depended almost entirely upon the handicraft skill of the weaver; but with the introduction of the power-loom the whole system was changed, and weaving practically became a new industry. With new machinery, and new processes, a want of definite information respecting their true functions and actions was keenly felt, and books began to be published which dealt with the more pressing problems. Nevertheless, when an impetus was given to technical education by the establishment of technical schools, a great lack of this class of literature was fully revealed.
