Das ungunstige Verhaltnis zwischen der raschen Vermehrung der Organismen und der relativ großen Gleichförmigkeit der Lebensbedingungen führt zu einem lebhaften Kampfe oder doch zu einem lebhaften Wettbewerb um die der Erhaltung dienenden Mittel. Der Kampf wütet selbst zwischen Einzelwesen, die unter ähnlichen Verhältnissen leben; ja er ist häufig genug zwischen Angehörigen der nämlichen Art von besonderer Stärke und Scharfe. Nun weichen aber alle Organismen der selben Art mehr oder weniger voneinander ab, und die Kinder eines und desselben Elternpaares gleichen weder diesem in allen Stücken noch einander selbst. Den abweichenden Eigen schaften kommt unter gleichartigen Umständen ein verschiedener Anpassungswert zu. Die Be sitzer von „vorteilhafteren Eigenschaften haben Aussicht, aus der Konkurrenz siegreich hervor zugehen, während die „schlecht ausgerüsteten in der Regel dem Untergange geweiht sind.
