Hausa-E nglish Dictionary already issued. In order to save expense and so lessen the price of the dictionary I have transliterated all the Hausa words in this part: their spelling in the original may be ascertained by referring to Vol. I. In accordance with the general principle here adopted all vowels are to be pronounced as in I talian, all consonants as in English. For further explanation and some account of Hausa phonology the student is referred to the preface attached to Vol. I. This dictionary has been seven years in course of preparation, and though I am fully conscious of its incompleteness and other deficiencies, its publication will, I trust, mark a distinct stage in the elucidation of this language and so fulfil in part the objects of the Hausa Association under whose auspices the work has been accomplished.
