Although the first of these processes certainly results in some transuranic radionuclides, these are produced in very small amounts, determined largely by the uranium content of the cooling water stream, and probably largely restrict ed to neptunium 239 and its daughter plutonium 239. There is little question that the overwhelming preponderance of plutonium, and virtually all of such hear transuranic elements as americium and curium, result from the second class of Operations. Because of this origin, in processes that are only secondary functions of the day-to-day power producing operations of the plants, the rates of release fluctuate widely in ways that, if they could be predicted, or even ascertained at the time of release, would be of considerable value in helping to establish time constants, especially of some of the biological, or sedimentological, interactions of the nuclides released.
