Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a thorough examination of the meanings and uses of the Latin prepositions ob and propter, beginning with the oldest surviving literature and continuing to the end of the Roman Republic, with the works of Cicero. The study is part of a larger project to analyze all Latin prepositions in a series of similar studies. In the earliest Latin, ob primarily signified motion towards something or opposition to something. Over time, it acquired additional meanings. It could indicate a reciprocal relationship, as in phrases like ob industriam, meaning something done in return for industry. It could also indicate a causal relationship, as in ob eam rem, meaning because of that thing. By the Republican era, the preposition was also used to denote purpose and compensation. Propter, meanwhile, originally meant "near" or "next to." It too acquired a causal sense, but only later than ob. In the Republican era, the two prepositions were largely interchangeable in this causal sense. However, ob was more commonly used with personal pronouns, while propter was more commonly used with things. This book will be of interest to scholars of Latin language and literature, as it provides a detailed and comprehensive analysis of two of the most important prepositions in the language.
