The author argues that, despite being later rebuilt in the Norman style, the church's original structure was built in the fifth century by British Christians and not, as some have argued, by the Saxons. In Britain, the Roman departure led to Saxon domination in the West, while the Orthodox Christianity practiced by the Britons survived only in the Celtic regions of the West and in Ireland. Thus, this building is a monument to both British Christianity and Celtic resistance to Saxon conquest.
