"Das letzte Jahrzehnt war eine sehr fruchtbare Periode für die Physik; in schneller Folge haben sich Entdeckungen von weittragendster Bedeutung und höchstem Interesse aneinandergereiht. Obwohl diese Untersuchungen sich auf sehr verschiedenen Gebieten bewegten, so stehen sie doch, wie eine genauere Prüfung zeigt, in sehr engem Zusammenhange; jede Entdeckung stellte zugleich einen Ausgangspunkt dar, von dem aus die Forschung weiterschreiten konnte. Den Ausgangspunkt dieser Epoche der Physik bildeten Röntgens Entdeckung der X-Strahlen im Jahre 1895 und Lenards Kathodenstrahlen-Versuche. Die außergewöhnlichen Eigenschaften der X-Strahlen zogen sofort die Aufmerksamkeit der wissenschaftlichen Welt auf sich und führten zu einer Reihe von Untersuchungen, deren Gegenstand es nicht allein war, die Eigenschaften der Strahlen selbst zu prüfen, sondern auch über die eigentliche Natur der Strahlen und ihren Ursprung Aufschluß zu verschaffen."
