Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines farm and home ownership through the United States utilizing national census records from 1890. This book represents the first attempt by the US Census Bureau to collect this type of data. The author takes a deep dive into the relationship between families and their dwellings. The data reveals that of all US families in 1890, 52% rented their homes, while 48% owned them; of those owners, 35% owned their homes outright, while 13% had mortgages. Furthermore, the data indicates that roughly 34% of farm families rented their property, while 66% owned; of those owners, 47% owned outright, while 19% had outstanding debts. One of the key findings from this investigation was that the vast majority of mortgages at the time were incurred to purchase the property, rather than for other purposes. This book will appeal to historians, economists, sociologists, and anyone interested in the evolution of homeownership and mortgage lending in the United States.
