Excerpt from Elements of Luganda Grammar
IN learning an unwritten language, there are many difficulties. Those who have a sensitive ear for sounds readily learn the language on the spot from the people, but have much difficulty in writing it down. Less gifted people often require to work by written rules; and it is only after several years of patient labour that they begin to appreciate the various sounds, and to study the proper value of each vowel and consonant. And without this study it is well nigh impossible to 'speak like a native,' or even to be understood by the uneducated peasant. No doubt in the case of those first mentioned the study is unconscious; but it is none the less real. Others again seem to occupy an inter mediate position; and these require to see the word written down before they feel able to remember it, or to follow the voice-sounds of that word as spoken by a native.
