The narrative begins with a vignette of the Native American tribes who inhabited the area before early European settlers, principally from Connecticut and Massachusetts, arrived. The text then examines the role of the region in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Many of the early settlers were veterans of these conflicts and as a result, military history is an especially-featured topic. Other topics include the development of the marble and slate industries in the area, agriculture, and the arrival of immigrants, especially Irish and French-Canadians, to the region during the nineteenth century. The author has written this book as a compilation of local histories and personal anecdotes, with the aim to preserve the stories of the people and places of this beautiful part of the country.
