Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of ancient church music, exploring the twelve "modes" or scales that formed its foundation. These modes, distinct from the major and minor scales of contemporary music, possess unique properties that imbue the music with a profound solemnity and devotional quality. The author traces the historical evolution of these modes, highlighting the changes and corruptions they have undergone since their inception. By comparing the original forms with later adaptations, the book reveals how the distinctive character of sacred music has been compromised over time. Through detailed analysis and illustrative examples, the author demonstrates the intricate relationships between the modes and their profound influence on musical expression. This exploration not only illuminates the theoretical underpinnings of ancient church music but also offers practical insights for musicians seeking to recapture its authentic spirit. Ultimately, this book serves as a compelling call to rediscover and appreciate the power of the church modes, reminding us of their unparalleled ability to evoke a sense of the sacred in music. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
