Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an extensive examination of birth customs and beliefs prevalent among the Negrito, Sakai, and Savage Malayan peoples, collectively known as the Orang Asli or aboriginal tribes of the Malay Peninsula. The author meticulously details the practices, rituals, and taboos surrounding childbirth, offering valuable insights into the cultural and spiritual beliefs of these indigenous communities. At the heart of the book lies the exploration of the profound connection between the Orang Asli and the natural world. The author delves into their animistic beliefs, which ascribe spiritual significance to natural phenomena and elements, shaping their understanding of pregnancy and childbirth. These beliefs are reflected in the various rituals and practices employed to ensure the well-being of both the mother and child, often involving the use of traditional herbal remedies and spiritual invocations. The book also highlights the role of birth-assistants, such as midwives and shamans, who play a crucial role in facilitating the birthing process and safeguarding the health of the mother and child. Their expertise in traditional healing methods and spiritual practices is deeply respected within the Orang Asli communities. Through a comprehensive analysis of the cultural and historical context, this book sheds light on the resilience and continuity of the Orang Asli's unique traditions. It underscores the importance of preserving and understanding their cultural heritage, as it offers valuable insights into human diversity and the evolution of cultural practices surrounding childbirth.
