Ce volume retrace les Opérations de l''armée du Nord sous le commandement de Kilmaine et de Bouchard. Lulmaine est contraint d''abandonner le camp de César et de se retirer sur Arras. Le brave et faible Houchard,secondé par Berthelmy et Gay - Vernon, a plus de succès; il gagne, mal gré ses hésitations, la bataille d''hondschoote et débloque Dunkerque; il écrase à Menin les Hol landais. Mais Le Quesnoy capitule; les garnisons de Cambrai et de Bouchain sont taillées en pieces àavesnes - le-sec; l''armée évacue Menin. On rend Houchard responsable des désastres et on lui reproche de n''avoir pas profité des vic toires; il est arrêté et condamné à mort.
