As a result of warfare and disease, only a few Narragansett speakers survived past the end of the 18th century, and the language was considered extinct for nearly a century and a half. The book's 600 or so words derive almost entirely from the work of Roger Williams, who learned the language during his years living among the Narragansett. Williams described the language as a dialect of Delaware and noted that it varied across relatively short distances. This book also offers a companion dictionary of about 100 surviving place names, in English and Narragansett, that are believed to have been in use when European colonists first arrived in what is now Rhode Island. The author completes the book with a history of the Narragansett people during the colonial era.
