The author shares entertaining anecdotes and provides a useful historical context for the reader. Diaries were an important means of recording day-to-day events and thoughts, many of which were not intended for public consumption. Learned men of the time used diaries for contemplative reflection on their work and lives. The author also discusses the work of censors during the time period, who were tasked with ensuring citizens did not read anything that might challenge the dominant ideology of the time period. This often included licensing of books by state-appointed officials and even burning books with dangerous ideas. The author stresses that while the press is now free from this oversight, there are still many forces that can prevent ideas from being published or heard.
